細かなさざ波のような地紋の上に、江戸時代に親しまれた歌舞伎をモチーフにした手描きの意匠が施されています。
背景を持たず、黒地に歌舞伎の絵だけが描かれたデザインは、現代では非常に希少な一着です。
格式ある黒羽織でありながら、このような柄物はよりファッショナブルな装いとして楽しまれていたことがうかがえます。
裏地と羽織紐は白で統一され、見えない部分には「紗綾形」と扇の文様が描かれています。扇は「末広」とも呼ばれ、吉祥の象徴として茶席や祝いの場に用いられる縁起の良い意匠です。
